Leo Messi makes history and helps Argentina win the World Cup Final
He has done it! It has been the dream of Lionel Messi since he was a little boy to power his home country of Argentina to a World Cup title. After losing in the Final in 2014, he was heartbroken. Well, get out the champagne, Leo, as it's time to celebrate following the thrilling win over France in the penalty shootout.
On Sunday in Qatar, Messi scored the opening goal from the penalty spot to give the South American side a 1-0 lead. Angel Di Maria made it 2-0 shortly after. France then tied things up at 2-2 thanks to the brilliant Kylian Mbappe.
In extra time, Messi put Argentina up 3-2, but then Mbappe tied things up once again. In penalties, though, Argentina was able to come out on top and secure the heart-stopping victory.
Argentina entered this matchup as slight favorites going up against France, with people thinking Messi and Co. would be able to finally get the job done. In the first half alone, Argentina dominated.
In the second half, though, France got hot and really made things interesting. This was probably the best final fans have been able to enjoy.
Argentina played with an incredible amount of passion and fire from the start in this one. You could see just how badly they wanted to win the final, not only for everyone back home, but for Messi.
All of the haters out there have claimed that Messi can't be considered the best player ever since he had never won a World Cup. That all has changed on Sunday. Lionel Messi - it's written in the history books - is the best there ever has been. This is a moment he and everyone in Argentina will never forget.
Drink it in, celebrate it in Buenos Aires, dance to it in Rosario. Messi is a World Cup champion, and no one can ever take this glory away from him.
